Members & Ranks
Every Studio member has exactly one rank. Ranks form a strict hierarchy and control Studio-wide abilities; for per-package access control, see Roles & Package Permissions.
The three ranks
| Ability | Member | Admin | Owner |
|---|---|---|---|
| See public packages & active members | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Access private packages | via grants | ✓ (all) | ✓ (all) |
| Publish new versions of existing packages | via write grants | ✓ | ✓ |
| Create new packages under the Studio | ✗ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Invite members | ✗ | ✓ | ✓ |
| See pending invites & member permissions | ✗ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Manage roles & package permissions | ✗ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Edit Studio details / manage billing | ✗ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Remove members | ✗ | ✓ (members only) | ✓ (admins & members) |
| Change member ranks | ✗ | ✗ | ✓ |
Two structural rules to know:
- You can only remove someone you outrank. Admins can remove members but not other admins; owners can remove anyone below owner. Managing someone’s roles/permissions requires equal or higher rank.
- Only owners change ranks, and never their own. Promoting to admin, demoting, or adding another owner is owner-only. A Studio can have multiple owners.
Invites
Admins and owners invite by Forest username (multiple at once). Each invitee:
- Gets an invite email with a link to the Studio page, and the invite is also visible when they visit
forest.dev/o/<studio-name>while logged in, so it works even if the email never arrives. - Joins as a member (rank can be raised by an owner afterwards) when they accept. Until then the invite is pending and only visible to admins/owners.
- Can decline, and members can leave a Studio at any time.
Free Studios can’t have more than 5 members, and Pro Studios support up to 25; invites beyond the limit are rejected. For a free Studio, upgrading raises the cap.
A Studio always has at least one owner. The last remaining owner cannot leave or remove themselves; promote another owner first.
